Alberta’s Premier Model United Nations Conference

UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA

HIGH SCHOOL MODEL UNITED NATIONS

The Twenty-Fourth Annual Session | February 19-21, 2026 | Hosted at the University of Alberta

Dear prospective delegates, teachers, and guests,

My name is Selva Arman Hernandez and I am honoured to be serving as your Secretary General for HSMUN 2026. This year will be the twenty-fourth annual conference since the University of Alberta High School Model United Nations (HSMUN) was created in 2002.

Throughout the years, thousands of delegates, teachers, community members, general and Secretariat volunteers have shaped HSMUN into what it is today, a conference for new ideas and inspiration that directly translates into real world challenges. I hope to continue HSMUN’s mission of encouraging global citizenship and collaborating in a diverse space with many voices. HSMUN provides an opportunity to develop soft skills such as negotiation, public-speaking, and diplomacy— many of which are foundational for any area of life.

As a high school delegate myself, I remember HSMUN being a pivotal moment to speak out, take risks, and start local conversations with those around me. I am grateful to hear that many other HSMUN delegates have also had similar experiences from their time in the conference and I am excited to see future students begin their own journeys with Model United Nations. Whether it is to step out of your comfort zone, try a new opportunity, or meet like-minded individuals, I hope everyone finds a place within HSMUN they can connect to.

My Secretariat and General Volunteer team and I are ready to deliver another extraordinary conference for HSMUN 2026 filled with new beginnings, growth opportunities, and peer-to-peer inspiration. Thank you for your support and we hope to see you in February 2026!

Warmest Regards,

Selva Arman Hernandez
Secretary General
HSMUN 2026

Our History

Our Mission

Founded by Dr. Andy Knight in 2002, the High School Model United Nations (HSMUN) strives to provide students in high school with an educational opportunity to develop a sense of global citizenship and maximize their self-growth. The Conference is held at the University of Alberta Campus, and is run entirely by University student volunteers. For some delegates, HSMUN is the first time they set foot on the UofA campus. For many, it is their first introduction to the University that they will call home during their future Undergraduate education and beyond. The UofA is an integral piece of HSMUN’s identity, and our volunteers are proud to welcome over 700 high school student delegates to campus each year.
By participating in the HSMUN conference, students gain confidence in public speaking, diplomacy, and policy creation. Through involvement in committee debates, students are able to network with other passionate and driven high school students from throughout Alberta. They also gain an appreciation for the crucial role of the United Nations in combatting real-world issues than threats.
